Project Description +

The rope house was an experimental structure which ECD acted as design and fabrication consultants in collaboration with Scan Lab and their teaching Unit at Canterbury University Architecture School.

The project was commissioned by The Secret Garden Party, a contemporary arts and music festival that takes place in the picturesque grounds of the Manor House in Huntingdon Cambridge.

The design was developed as a scaffold frame with a series of bespoke nodes to create a stealth like faceted exoskeletal form which was then wrapped in 3 kilometres of golden rope.

The installation was used during the festival to house performing arts creating an experiential, dynamic and immersive space. Located on top of a small mound, the structure was comparable to a small chapel. During the darkness of night, smoke machines and high powered lighting achieved a powerful and monumental effect. It became compelling spectacle for all festival goers, becoming some what of a landmark amongst the festivities.

It was recognised in the Architect’s Journal Small Projects shortlist in 2014.
