Project Description +

The brief is to extend and convert the lo of a two bed upper maisonette in Leytonstone and provide a flexible studio and additional living space with access to a new roof terrace. The client has aspirations to add capital value to the property through increased floor area and a new roof garden with high quality finishes and detailing.

Conceived as a planted crown, the timber insertion begins at a new staircase which connects the upper habitable floor and the loft space.

A trabeated structural module sets a rhythm which is carried through to the pergola and in turn expressed in external detailing. At the roof terrace, the proposed materials are high quality, robust and durable. They are finished with standing seam zinc mansard cladding on an oak and steel framed structure while carefully positioned weather screens create privacy, framing views across the roof tops to the tree lined streets beyond.

The terrace houses a hot-tub, a small bar with log burner and a space for outdoor cooking and entertaining.

This new secret garden is softened with perimeter planters giving the character of a hidden oasis among the rooftops.
